In the Bloons Tower Defense series (often abbreviated Bloons TD or BTD), the main objective of the game is to pop the enemy Bloons before they reach the end of the path on the game screen. There are also several "player packs" – groups of levels developed by players of the Bloons series. As new games in the series developed, more and more aspects of the game were expanded upon with many new Bloons and levels being introduced. Others have an area blast effect (again, when hit) like a bomb. For example, when some Bloons are hit, they provide the player with 3 darts to fire at once during his next shot. There is much strategy involved, especially since some Bloons have special powers or affect the player's darts in both helpful and hindering ways. The fewer darts the player uses, the better his or her score for that level. On each, the player is given several darts used to pop the Bloons on the screen. The games consist of various levels, each with a different and unique layout of Bloons. There are many sequels and spin-offs of this series, with large fan support (indicated by the "player packs" discussed later). The player is able to choose the power, aim, and other factors involving the launch of darts and hence the path it will follow and what Bloons it will pop. In all of the main games, the goal is for the player to clear the playing area of all Bloons (which, as implied, have similar traits to balloons) using a limited number of darts. The Bloons series is the original grouping of games developed under the "Bloons" name.
By 2011 the game had been played over 3 billion times.
It proved popular, especially after being picked up by Digg, and soon reaching approximately 100,000 players per day. The first version was developed quickly, and the game was released in late March 2007. When Stephen asked her what would be fun in a new game, she brought up carnival games with darts and balloons. The basic concept for Bloons came from Stephen's wife. The site was a success, and this led to their work on Bloons. Instead they decided to focus on their own games, and launched a website – – with five of their own games. After the success of Cash Sprint, they developed their own web portal for flash games, but failed to gain the necessary traffic. Prior to working on Bloons, the pair had released Cash Sprint – a successful racing game that incorporated weekly prizes. The first Bloons game was developed by Stephen and Chris Harris, two brothers from New Zealand. This game also helps to improve players ability to plan and think strategically when setting up defense towers. The traditional "Balloon and Dart" carnival game provided the inspiration for the original Bloons game. Players must manage their in-game funds and determine what purchases are most effective. The main theme in the game is buying and selling items to build an impenetrable defense. WHAT YOU LEARN FROM PLAYING BLOONS TOWER DEFENSE Try planning different tower combos and setups as you take on the different playing fields. What works best on one track may not work best on the others. It’s a good idea to use these to take out any balloons your towers may have missed once the round has started. These tools only last for one round, so once you’ve popped all the balloons, they’ll disappear. These items are best saved if you’re ever overwhelmed with balloons. You’ll be able to sell them down the line to make more money and buy more powerful defenses. Use upgrades to help boost your towers and increase their value.
Each tower or monkey will have a few upgrades you can tack on as you play. Watch out for rainbow balloons! Those are the toughest to pop.
It’s best to upgrade your line of defense when faced with these bigger balloons. These balloons will take more than one hit to pop - and as you hit them, they’ll spawn more balloons! Hitting a blue balloon will spawn a red, a green balloon will spawn blue, yellow will spawn green and so on. As you advance, you’ll start to see different colored and faster balloons coming down the track. At the beginning, you’ll only see red balloons fly by. Like the Bloons Tower Defense games?
